Google Googles is an application based on the Android platform for phones. It has been well known for integrating visual images and absorb it into information that may be searched in the internet. It is good when it captures people, places, and some locations, but its still far from perfect

The business model and core capabilities for Google Goggles are the following:

  • real-time
  • searches described in a picture.
  • Their partner network is the phone companies that utilize the Android platform and media partners

The goal is therefore to make all searches really fast and real-time with a visually way!

Their value proposition is making searches to be more futuristic, and high-tech accented, for those who adapt advanced technology. They may increase the customer relationship through events and competitions regarding the apps, or special offers with the registered ventures.  They have only one distribution channel, the internet. And their target audience is earlier adapters and technological geeks.

The cost structure is derived from the cost of research, marketing, and product maintenance, while their revenue will most like come from advertisements of the firms.

Task 6: The IDEO Way

A few weeks since my last blog so I thought it would be nice to write something about IDEO – an extremely creative and innovative company from the USA!

IDEO was formed in 1991 in a merger of four different design firms. The companys core business is to help design products services, environments and digital experiences. This far they have developed thousands of products and services for clients around the globe. The special culture and way to work has made the company very interesting in the eyes of myriad academics, businesses and journalists around the world and additionally one of the founders have made a best selling book, The Art of Innovation (Tom Kelley). One of the most famous things IDEO is known for is their innovative rapid prototyping  or the IDEO way.

The IDEO way is a five step process which aims to design better consumer experience.

1. Observation

The idea of the Observation phase is to understand the consumer experience. This is done with the help of people from different fields and backgrounds e.g. psychologists, anthropologists and sociologists. The company uses multiple different techniques to really understand the customer experience which are for example Shadowing, Camera Journals and Storytelling. All of the different methods have their own pros and cons – and usually multiple are used in a single project.

2. Brainstorming

Brainstorming as a concept is probably familiar to most of you dear followers. The idea is to come up with as many ideas in one hour and even really crazy ideas are not limited in any way as many of the unorthodox ideas might be the best ones. The IDEO brainstorming has really strict rules that you can find in the internet if you are interested!

3. Rapid Prototyping

In Rapid Prototyping a prototype of a product is made as fast as possible as it helps everyone to visualize and understand the problem more easily. The prototype is usually crude but the benefits are quite clear. The following is an example of the IDEO Rapid Prototyping: Videography – make short movies to depict the consumer experience.

4. Refining

The second last phase is about narrowing down the possible choices to as few as possible which basically means that of the generated ideas only the best ones are saved and evaluated more closely. For this phase its really good to have all the support from the most important stakeholders as the more decision power is behind an idea the more likely it is a success.

5. Implementation

At the last phase IDEO utilizes its diverse and strong skills all around the world to finish and actually create a product and service. This includes people from over 40 countries which means there is a lot of CREATIVITY and INNOVATION involved!!!

Untill next post!

Bezos wanted a name for his company that began with “A” so that it would appear early in alphabetic order. He began looking through the dictionary and settled on “Amazon” because it was a place that was “exotic and different” and it was the river he considered the biggest in the world, as he hoped his company would be. Since 2000, Amazon’s logotype is an arrow leading from A to Z, representing that they carry every product from A to Z.

2. Show and explain the innovation of the company those on

a) technology

As mentioned before amazon.com is the world’s largest online retailer in the world. It has several offices, fulfillment centers, customer service centers and software development centers all across North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The website attracted 615 million visitors annually by 2008, twice as much as walmart.com.

Amazon.com is cooperating with third-party sellers. 40% of it sales are coming from affiliate marketing which is called ‘Amazon Association’. By using Affiliate Marketing commissions were paid to the association for referring customers to Amazon via links on their websites. Over 900 000 members are in affiliate programs. The main advantage of Amazon is a homogeneous payment system contrary to eBay for example.

The Amazon catalog can directly be access via Amazon Web Services (AWS) XML service. Also targeting is a common tool used by Amazon. Hereby Amazon is able to remember pages the customer visit before and show single products and services in your email account. So the customers will be reminded what products they searched before and the likelihood of a purchase is increased.

Products sold by Amazon are ranked via Amazon sales rank by their popularity. The relative indicator of popularity is updated every hour. It is to mention that the Amazon sales rank has no direct influence on the sale of products, but it helps Amazon list the most popular products in their best sellers list. Thereby an increase of sell of those products is possible because they have an additional exposure on the Amazon website.

b) process

The process at Amazon is characterized by making everything as easy as possible for the customer. When you enter Amazon’s website you can choose one of its categories to find you required product or just by using the “google” type search function, which means that finding a product is extremely easy and fast. After you have chosen your product or products you can check your current amount of products in the shopping cart, where you can also proceed on paying your purchases. All the steps for paying are provided  with tips, which means that the whole process is rather easy for even a new customer!

Amazon also includes the possibility to rate the whole process e.g. services, products and even suppliers. This is a good function because then customers themselves make the service better and quicker for everyone!

Another good feature is called ‘search inside the box’ where customers can look up for keywords in many complete books and e-books. To secure the copyrights of authors Amazon does not return the computer-readable texts of books but pictures of the page. Therefore its quite hard to print the whole book by using the keyword function.

c) the product / service

Amazon started as an online bookstore and by now the products offered via Amazon are countless. A few examples of sold procuts are for example the following: books, music CDs, videotapes and DVDs, software, consumer electronics, kitchen items, tools, lawn and garden items, toys & games, baby products, apparel, sporting goods, gourmet food, jewelry, watches, health and personal-care items, beauty products, musical instruments, clothing, industrial & scientific supplies, and groceries.

d) business model

Amazon’s business plan was very unusual and the company did not expect a profit for four to five years. The growth was not fast enough and stockholders complained. But when the dot.com bubble burst, many e-companies went out of business while Amazon survived and started to prosper. Consequently Amazon received its first profit in 2001 ($5 million).

This revenue showed that the business model was profitable, although it was modest. The model itself was based on a multi level e-commerce strategy. It started with a Business-to-Customer relationship and Business-to-Business strategy. Later on it moved to incorporate Customer-to- Business transactions. Very special is that Amazon lets almost everybody to sell almost everything by their platform. Even other e-commerce companies use Amazon to retail their products. Smaller suppliers are able to offer their goods at fixed prices.

3. Make suggestions or predictions of future innovations to the company concerned.

A possible scenario is that the Amazon Appstore will become the biggest provider of Android tablet apps. This is an possible result from the Kindle Fire’s unprecedented grab of the Android tablet market share, something no other Android tablet has been able to do. Basically, if you’re an Android developer, you’ll want to be on the Kindle Fire, and that means you have to prioritize the Appstore over the Android Market.

This is unfortunate for Google, which has invested much time and effort into optimizing Android for tablets with its “Honeycomb,” “Ice Cream Sandwich” versions. The Kindle Fire runs Android 2.3 “Gingerbread,” although Amazon’s tweaked it to look nothing like other Android interfaces. With the red-hot Fire, though, Amazon will have a lot of influence among consumers and developers, and its mutant ecosystem is on track to become the market leader among Android tablets.

Task 5: What is the most important innovation for me?

Hi again,

This time I’m going to discuss what’s the most important innovation for me. It’s a hard question to answer as many innovations (especially smaller ones) start to feel normal after a little while and therefore it’s sometimes hard to point them up.

For me one of the most important innovation in this world is personal computers and mobile computing as they both have an immense effect on my and other peoples life. PCs and mobile computing affect my life on many different areas e.g. working, studying and my free time.

With mobile computer (or smartphone) I’m able to work anywhere I want to with a complete access to my company network, which basically allows me to be really productive as I can for example knit together my studying and working. A good example is that if I have only a few hours time to work before going to lecture, I really can work that two hours instead of going to the office which would take back and forth around one hour. So my effective working time already doubles! PCs and mobile computing also allows me to do things I enjoy even if I’m moving from point A to B i.e. travelling. So before pretty tedious train trips nowadays are way more fun as I can watch a movie for example.

In the future both of these and information technology in general will have probably even more profound effect on all of us!

Task 4: What is the most creative company? Why?

In my opinion one of the most creative companies in the world is Google because it has provided the whole world with seemingly free services e.g. searches, email and so forth which have helped the world to become even more globalisized i.e. smaller with more connections between people all around the world. Google has done it all with the end-user and customer in mind as its completely free and only companies have to pay for advertisement and or when using it to make profit.

Google has also created the Android mobile phone OS, which has become immensely popular and has given many other companies the required kickstart to start producing their own mobile and smart phones. Anything that increases the competition is more than welcome in my opinion!

So Google is in my opinion the most creative company as it is constantly pushing forward the boundaries of internet and communication for the average guy like you and me!
